Common Traps & How to Avoid Them
Top 4 mistakes students make on geometry exams and assignments.
Using Diameter Instead of Radius
If a problem specifies diameter $d = 10\text{ cm}$, always divide by 2 first ($r = 5\text{ cm}$) before squaring. If you square 10, your answer will be four times too large!
Forgetting the 1/3 Factor
Multiplying $\pi r^2 h$ yields the volume of a cylinder. Never forget to divide the cylinder volume by 3 for a cone.
Confusing Slant Height ($l$) with Altitude ($h$)
Slant height $l$ is the diagonal hypotenuse along the outer edge. Vertical height $h$ is perpendicular. If given $l$, solve $h = \sqrt{l^2 - r^2}$ before computing volume.
Mismatched Dimension Units
If radius is in centimeters ($5\text{ cm}$) and height is in meters ($0.2\text{ m}$), convert to the same unit first ($20\text{ cm}$) before calculating.
